Pakistan to clash with India in Asian Champions Trophy final

KARACHI: Pakistan played a 2-2 draw against India to qualify for the final of the 1st Men’s Asian Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament in Ordos, China on Friday. The first half remained goalless and real action was seen in the second session. From the greenshirts Waqar Sharif (40th minute) scored a field goal followed by a penalty corner goal by Mohammad Irfan (43rd minute). Pakistan will play final against India on September 11. India, the only unbeaten team in the tournament, staged a remarkable fightback to hold the Asian Games champion in an absorbing affair. Rupinder Pal Singh reduced the margin from an indirect penalty corner in the 46th minute before Danish Mujtaba found the equaliser in the 53rd minute.\n\nPakistan were through to the Sunday final with the drawn result but India had to wait for the outcome of the remaining two matches to know their fate. South Korea made their exit when they were held 1-1 by bottom-placed China, while India heaved a huge sigh of relief when Malaysia came back from a two-goal deficit to pip Japan 3-2. Korea will play China for the fifth and sixth positions Sunday while Malaysia will clash with Japan for the bronze medal, to be followed by the India-Pakistan grand finale.\nMeanwhile, former Olympian Wasim Feroze has felicitated the Pakistan team for reaching the final of the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy. “This new-looking and young team have proved their mettle by qualifying for the final,” he said. “It will be a great achievement if they win the event,” he added. Former left winger Wasim said because of Pakistan’s better track record against India, they were favourites to win the inaugural event. “We have a long history of winning the inaugural events like World Cup and Champions Trophy. This is a good opportunity for us to keep up the tradition in China,” he maintained. He supported the decision of the selection committee, headed by former Olympian Hanif Khan, for keeping faith in youngsters. “We must now rely on young guns after their good performance in the Asian Champions Trophy,” he said. It is pertinent to mention that the selection committee rested seniors goalkeeper Salman Akbar, full back Sohail Abbas and forward Rehan Butt to try and utilise new talent. “It is time that few seniors still in the team must also be replaced to make the way for youngsters in the larger interest of the team,” he concluded.\nMeanwhile, chief selector Hanif is also delighted that Pakistan’s young team lived up to the expectations and displayed a better show to reach the final. “I am thankful to Almighty Allah who helped the team reach the final. It is a real morale-boosting and I am confident if they reduced their errors they are capable of toppling India in the final,” he said.\n
